Lisbon - Belem area, Belem Tower, Monument to the Discoveries, Naval Museum

One day we took the train out the Belem, which is west down the river closer to where it meets the sea. It is also one of the few places in Lisbon that is flat (the other being Baixa).

We saw Belem tower (finished in 1519. We didn't wait the two hours to go inside. Normally I would have liked to go inside (even though some of the videos I watched before coming said it wasn't worth it) but I wasn't willing to wait two hours.

A stone tower sits beside the water

Also in Belem is the Monument to the Discoveries

We walked to Jeronimos Monastery, but the line was way to long and our main thing we wanted to see was the Naval Museum. Travel tip, cities/countries who had large maritime empires tend to have very cool naval museums. Or maybe I just like naval museums. Anyway, Portugal's did not disappoint.

Some great street art on the way.

When trying to find the naval museum, just look for the biggest anchor you've ever seen. Unless you were in the navy I guess. Every naval museum I've visited has had a humongous anchor out front.

Portugal's sailors have had some great hats.
