Carmo Convent

A short walk from our apartment was Carmo Convent. This is the remains of a large Gothic convent that was partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 that destroyed 60% of the buildings in the city. Restoration was started in the 19th C., but stopped and in the spirit of the age it was left as a ruin. It is very evocative and has great photo opportunities. Also a cat named Carlotta lives there. Out front is a Largo with a public fountain. There is also a small archaeological museum and even smaller (but still worth visiting) gift shop.

They called this an unidentified animal effigy but it looks like a possum to me ;-). I love effigy vessels and this was my favorite thing in the museum.
