The Travels of Eric and Lorna

This is the day we flew to Chiang Mai. We thought about taking an overnight train, but it's a 12 hour ride, and to maximize our time, we decided to just fly. We flew on a local budget airlines called Air Asia , and two round trip tickets cost us about $158, which was pretty good. To make it easier I booked our flight for around noon. After another breakfast at the hotel restaurant, we headed to the airport, which is a 45 minute ride from central Bangkok. The new Bangkok airport, Suvarnabhumi (which, somehow, is pronounced Swan-a-poom) is really nice. The main terminal is, by some measures, the largest in the world, and it is indeed extremely huge. There were apparently some problems when it first opened, but it seemed to be operating smoothly every time we were there. I even remembered to have the doorman at the hotel tell the taxi driver that we were flying domestic, so he took us to the correct area. Today was, by any account, an awesome day. After our usual great breakfast, we went down to see the Chiang Mai Flower Festival, one of the premier festivals of the area. We watched the parade for a couple of hours, then walked through the old city to a large park where everyone was gathered. All of the floats were there for everyone to see, and everyone was indeed there to see them. After walking around for a while, we actually took a tuk tuk, our first, to The Chedi, a high end hotel, where I bought some cigars. I paid way too much, of course, but WTF, we're on vacation, right? After getting back home, L went shopping, and I sat on the porch and smoked a Cohiba and had a couple of beers. All in all, it is hard to imagine a day being any better.
